Out with Writely and in with Google Docs

11 10 2006

When I logged into my Writely account today I was surprised to see that it has now been combined with Google Spreadsheets to be called ‘Google Docs & Spreadsheets‘.  So what does this mean for Writely?

  • It is now easier to access both your spreadsheets and your documents
  • Collaborators can now invite new collaborators
  • You can invite people to just view but not edit
  • The layout of the actual toolbars etc has changed, it seems a little less clunky now.

So what do you think, is Google Docs and improvement on Writely?

Having used it most of the day to produce a course briefing to ‘publish’ for students I would say yes.
The “search docs and spreadsheets” tool really useful as is the new “Insert” toolbar with special characters. Doc management consderably improved. Took me ages to find spellcheck ( I was beginning to panic), and its so obvious when you see it in bottom left corner of document.

Theo, I need to teach you your left form your right, unless the spellcheck button moves around - it is in my bottom right hand corner.

Sorry Steve - of course you are right - it is on the left, my only excuse is it was very late at night, and I did have a glass of wine to hand. I realised my mistake as soon as I clicked the Submit button. I have no ambitions to be a taxi driver!
